The Premier League will implement semi-automated offside technology starting next season, with the goal of expediting VAR decisions. This system will utilize camera footage and tracking software to determine player positions during potential offside situations, eliminating the manual analysis previously conducted by VAR teams. Trials have demonstrated a significant reduction in the average length of VAR decisions by 31 seconds using this method.
Premier League clubs unanimously voted to introduce semi-automated offside technology during a shareholders' meeting on Thursday. Its implementation is expected in the autumn, although not at the start of the season. Previously, the league had reservations about adopting the technology, but it has now received full support from referees' chief Howard Webb, who expressed his delight at the decision.
Semi-automated offside technology, which was utilized during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, eliminates the manual addition of lines to camera images by VARs. Instead, it generates graphics that can be displayed to fans in stadiums. However, VARs may still need to assess offside decisions, particularly when goals are scored, depending on the complexity of the situation.
Howard Webb and the referees' body PGMOL are currently discussing the possibility of allowing fans to view the footage examined by referees at VAR monitors simultaneously with officials. Additionally, there is an expectation that referees will announce brief messages regarding the outcome of VAR decisions in stadiums next season.
In a statement, the league highlighted that the technology will ensure quicker and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking. It will also produce high-quality broadcast graphics, enhancing the experience for both stadium attendees and viewers at home.
