Simona Halep is once again eligible to compete in tennis matches after her doping suspension was substantially reduced.

Simona Halep's four-year suspension from tennis due to doping has been mitigated to nine months following a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), which found her not guilty of intentional doping. This decision allows Halep to promptly resume her professional tennis career.

Previously, the former world No 1 and two-time grand slam champion had faced suspension after testing positive for roxadustat in September. The ruling marked a significant moment in tennis history as it was the sport’s first anti-doping rule violation through the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) program. At 32, a four-year ban could have potentially ended Halep’s career.

Halep was initially charged with two anti-doping rule violations for the presence of roxadustat in her system and irregularities in her athlete biological passport. However, she appealed these charges to Cas, arguing that the doping was not intentional and that the substance entered her body through a contaminated supplement, Keto MCT.

After a hearing in February, the Cas panel unanimously decided to reduce her suspension to nine months. They acknowledged that while Halep had not been sufficiently cautious with the supplement, her violations were not intentional, and she bore no significant fault or negligence.

Regarding the ABP charge, the Cas panel accepted a blood sample Halep provided for an unrelated surgery in September, which contradicted the initial tribunal's findings. They also noted Halep's public announcement that she wouldn't compete for the remainder of 2022 after the surgery, which affected the plausibility of the doping scenarios presented by the ITF Independent Tribunal.

The Cas panel dismissed the ABP charge, stating they were not entirely convinced that a doping violation had occurred based on the irregularities in Halep’s blood parameters.

Simona Halep expressed her relief at the outcome, stating, “My faith in the process was tested by the scandalous accusations that were levelled against me, and by the seemingly unlimited resources that were aligned against me. I cannot wait to return to the tour.”

Karen Moorhouse, CEO of the International Tennis Integrity Agency, acknowledged the importance of players' right to appeal and respected the outcome. She also mentioned awaiting the full reasoned decision for thorough review.
